Our Co-founder and CEO Meir Bartur has been selected to the Electro Optics
“Photonics 100 2025” list, which celebrates innovators driving our industry forward.
Optical Zonu would like to offer a big thank you to the judges at Electro Optics, one of the largest sources of news and analysis in the Photonics industry, and the greater Europa Science team, for recognizing Meir and his important work in radio frequency over fiber (RFoF) technologies.
These technologies range from existing Optical Zonu solutions like our patented uOTDR that can plug into existing data transport switches and locate fiber fault anywhere within a few meters, and new research into lasers that can maintain fixed gain of RFoF without cooling to reduce transmitter power requirements and ultimately cuts costs.

Meir Bartur believes the greatest opportunity for growth in photonics over the next year will come from uncooled direct modulation lasers with high bandwidths – which neatly explains why the company he founded more than 20 years ago is currently working on it.
He is developing a new method to maintain the fixed gain of radio frequency over fibre (RFoF) links using uncooled lasers. He outlines a specific benefit: “When you have matched links that carry different polarisations of free space radiation, you can maintain the gain between two or more channels balanced over temperature. Avoiding the need for cooling and temperature stabilisation reduces transmitter power requirements and cuts costs.”
Dr Bartur is also responsible for the development of patented micro-pluggable optical time domain reflectometers (uOTDR) that can plug into existing data transport switches, provide fully compatible (MSA-based) data transport and locate the fibre fault anywhere on the fibre network within a few metres. He and his team are still finding new ways to use this OTDR data to help network operators.
Dr Bartur holds 16 patents in total and has published numerous scientific papers on subjects ranging from fibre optic to material science innovations.
